We heard with great sadness that our Vice Chairman John Hughes died unexpectedly on Sunday 21 January 2024. John had been involved with the RSPBA for over 20 years, initially with the Lothian and Borders Branch. He had competed as a piper in a number of bands and had become the President of that branch in 2017.
John filled a number of key roles in the RSPBA; Vice Chairman of the RSPBA from 2011, Chairman from 2018 to 2021, and Vice Chair again from 2023. As Vice Chairman he was leading a group searching for Championship venues for 2024.
As a young man he served in the Falklands, seeing action with the Parachute Regiment at Goose Green. His civilian career was in finance, IT and management. He brought considerable common sense and a strong work ethic to the Association, and he will be greatly missed. Our condolences go out to Carol and his family at this sad time.
