General Background

The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association is a charity (SCO18153) and is registered with Companies House.  It has a turnover of some £0.750m.  Income is heavily dependent on sponsorship which can vary considerably year on year plus membership fees from some 200 UK &NI bands.  

The small administrative team based in the HQ in Glasgow consists of a full time CEO plus 4 part time support staff.  All Directors are unpaid volunteers elected by their regional branch.

  • Genuine passion for or connection to pipe band culture and Scottish heritage.
  • Strong business or corporate networks in Scotland.
  • Public profile and credibility that commands respect.
  • Understanding of the volunteer-led nature of pipe band organizations.
  • Experience of building corporate partnerships, sponsorship acquisition or fundraising is highly desirable.

Role of the President

  • Preside over meetings of the Board of Directors (BoD) when invited to do so by the Chairman.
  • Provide advice to the BoD in a non-executive capacity on matters pertaining to the business of the Association.
  • Provide advice to the Chairman, CEO and Executive Committee.
  • Promote goodwill and harmony within the RSPBA.
  • Act as an Ambassador for the RSPBA in the promotion of its aims, objectives and ideals.
  • Promote international relations and co-operation with other piping, drumming, pipe band or musical associations.
  • Act as a representative of the RSPBA and speak on behalf of the Association at various functions.
  • Maximise links and connections to further the interests of the RSPBA, especially in building relations with potential commercial partners and sponsors.
  • Carry out any other specific duties as requested by BoD.

Routine Commitments for the President

  • Attendance at Major pipe band contests – 4 x per year plus World Pipe Band Championships.
  • Board Meetings – 4 times per year plus AGM.
  • The President’s attendance at Committee meetings is discretionary. Most meet 4 times per year, Finance (FIMC) meets every 2 months.
